Web-based application on a PC will provide a visualization interface of medical device location information.To access the location information, a user will sign in to the secure NGEMS web portal using a commercial web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Google Chrome and configurable to legacy infrastructure requirements of hospitals. Once signed in, the authorized user will be presented with the NGEMS dashboard. This dashboard has been tailored to the specific use case of Hospital Asset Management. Users will select the floor and asset for which they are searching, and the results will appear on a visual map and list view showing the location of devices. This information will update in real-time as the assets move to different locations within the hospital.
NGEMS software comprises of a NodeJS based API server and a ReactJS based web platform. The NGEMS modules collect real-time location data and transfer it to be stored in AWS PostgreSQL database using write servers. The read servers act as a gateway between the data and users. It provides various ways of accessing stored data in form of JSON objects based on different filters such as buildings, floors, date range, device type etc. The API is also used by the web platform to display data in real time using web sockets. It shows information visualized on the floor maps equally divided into zones.
Hardware
Hardware Enabled Software as a Service Platform
NGEMS asset monitoring hardware consists of a tag mounted on the equipment to be tracked. The tag has a simple interface of one button which can be pushed to change the state of the device from ‘in-use’ to ‘free’. This is indicated by an LED on the device as well.
When the user presses the button, the tag wakes up and sends the current state of the device, as well as the strength of all the wifi and bluetooth signals in range. This information is then used to triangulate the position of the device on the server side. The device goes back to deep sleep, conserving power.
Because the device communicates to the server over GSM, no additional hardware needs to be installed. Cost scales linearly with the number of devices in use. And, because triangulation is done on the server-side, all tags have identical software. This allows for additional hardware to be deployed with speed, as well as allows for pilot demos with as few as one device, and no other cost.
5cm x 2.5cm x 1.5 cm in size. Approximately the size of two quarters. They can be made fully enclosed and water resistant.
Scaling:
Because the tags are independent units that only transmit over LTE, scaling is not an issue. As long as LTE service is available as many devices as needed can be deployed.
Location engine:
Triangulation is done using wifi and bluetooth signal strength. The wifi environment is mapped out upon deployment and KNN grouping is used to locate the device based on signal strength. The location accuracy is approximately 6meters, but this is highly variable based on the number of wifi routers present. Location accuracy can be improved by deploying off the shelf bluetooth beacons.
